Myles Monthly: 21

As you may know, I didn't decide to start my blog until my son Myles was about 8 months old. And well... now he is over 2 years old! I'm still trying to get caught up with the monthly updates and monthly favorites, so I can get, and hopefully stay, up to date.

 April 15th- May 14th, 2014

Health/Personality
Stat Update: Because of insurance reasons we had his 18 month well check a little late. So at almost 21 months he was 24.6 pounds 34 inches. I think the height was a little off because now at 27 months he is 34 1/2 inches, so I think they were high on that stat. And his poor weight; he started out at like the 90% in the early months and has steadily gone down to like the 20 percentile now. He is very strong and normal height, but so skinny. 18-24 month pants are still falling off of him! He is my little peanut now!

Since the health category is kind of phasing out lately and his personality is coming on strong these days, I figured I would start to change up this category a bit.
This month the terrible twos came on strong! He was always wanting to do things that were dangerous or defiant. Although I am sure he didn't really understand what he was doing wrong or why I was saying no. The worst was that he always wanted to run out in the street. I tried to keep him away, but I also wanted to expose him so that he would learn. He definitely didn't understand 'no' and I was beginning to think I was headed for the point of no return. I picked up a couple books, one of them being The Happiest Toddler on the Block hoping to avert my foreseen doomed future. I actually really enjoyed the book and found a lot of helpful hints if any of you are looking for a recommendation.
He also started to be over going to The Little Gym. We had been going since he was 11 months old and recently moved up to a new class. He didn't want to participate in group activities and became bored after being there a couple minutes. It was a great place to go and we really loved our teachers, but I could just tell that it was time to let that one go.
To end on a positive note, he also started showing an interest in the way things work. He always wanted to help his daddy fix, make, build, etc. He knew right where the all the tools were and loved to get out the hammer!

Eating
Steadily trying more foods and adding more to each meal. Still no breakfast food, just milk, but lunch and dinner were going good. Nothing new in the breastfeeding department. Same schedule as last month: once in the morning, at nap time, and before bed.

  Sleeping

Before we went back to visit my parents in Illinois this time, I told them to sell his old crib. It was a smaller one with the changing table attached and he was too big for it now. I thought about buying another, bigger crib, but it didn't seem like it would be worth it considering he would most likely be in a toddler bed soon. I also thought about bringing our pack 'n play, but that was getting too small for him too. So I gave my parents the okay to look for a big boy bed for him. I wasn't sure what exactly was going to happen because he was still in a crib at home. I was hoping for the best and expecting (dreading) the worse.
I showed them a Buzz bed I found on Craigslist just for fun, knowing it was too expensive for just a vacation bed. My mom told me she bought just a regular cheap one and I was happy with that. However, we were both surprised when we got there and saw this:

He was so excited he was fumbling over his words! And at that point, I knew that the bed was totally worth it! I figured the fact that he loved it so much might work in my favor to get him to sleep in it! At night we laid down thick layers of blankets on each side in case he fell off. I did our normal routine, nursed him a bit, and laid him down. He went to sleep with no problems.. miracle! He did wake up early and get into bed with me for a while, but that was expected from him. I couldn't believe how well he did! I am guessing he was exhausted from the trip because the next night... not so much... I did everything the same and then a couple minutes later he was up walking around crying for me. I let him go a bit to see what he would do and within a couple minutes I didn't hear him anymore. When I went in there to go to bed myself, I found him sleeping on the blankets that were on the side of the bed. I didn't dare move him, knowing that the blankets were probably more comfortable than the bed anyway! The next night he got up and cried again, only this time it lasted longer. I waited it out and again he put himself back down. Then every night after that was fine. So all in all, it went way better than I could have ever imagined. With his sketchy sleeping history, I was really preparing for a total disaster and it wasn't too bad. The transition back home was a little rough the first few nights because he was used to coming in bed with me around 5am, but he quickly got over that and fell back to his normal routine of bedtime being from 9pm-8am. Also one nap still from 1pm-3/4pm.

Saying
Adding words each month that were new and I remembered to write down:
'Op' for open- Op please or Op door
Up (to carry him), outside, Otay
Starting to repeat words back after you say them
Starting to say 'ABCs' and says letters when looking at words
Can count to 6 but not all the way thorough at the same time

Names for family members: Uncle Tick (uncle Chris), Papa (grandpa), Dabo (grandma)
I have no idea where Dabo came from. When we went back to visit them. he woke up in the morning and went to the garage door and said "Where's Dabo?" and it has stuck with every since. So now I am guessing she will be Dabo for the rest of her life!

Outings
  • We spent the actual holiday of Easter in Illinois. We did some Easter egg hunting, church going, brunch eating, egg dying, and tons of family hanging:
  • This month we were on a Jamba Juice kick so we had many a Jamba Juice dates. Myles called it "Tippy juice" because we went there a lot with his friend Cammy (who he called Tippy).
  •  We also got to celebrate some great friends' birthdays. His bestie Cammy turned 2.

And our little friend Kenny turned one!
  • We took a day trip to the Children's Museum of Stockton. I found out about this place on Yelp and thought we would give it a try. We drove a little over an hour to get there and at first I didn't think it was worth it. I picked this place solely based on some pictures I saw online of emergency vehicles that you were able to get into and explore. I thought for sure Myles would love it.. well of course he was in and out of them within 5 seconds and didn't even care to check them out. At that point, I figured it would be a dud of a trip. Luckily Myles found a makeshift pinball machine that kept his attention for like a half an hour! And once we started exploring the rest of the museum, we found tons of things to keep our interest: train table, mini golf, art room, house with kitchen, farm, grocery store, newsroom, and water table. So in the end it was a successful trip and a place I would recommend for the little ones.
  • While we were vising back home we got to spend some quality time with my lifelong best friend and her kids. It was going to be my niece's birthday in a couple weeks (and I would be missing it) so I wanted to take her some place that we could spent some time together. And now that Myles was getting older, he could play and interact with the older kids more, so we took them all to a family fun park for mini golf, go-carts, and arcade games. We tried to get Myles on the go-cart but it took too long to start and he wanted out before we got going. He played a little mini-putting, but it mostly turned into him trying to throw his ball into all of the water features. But I really had the best time with them.. they make my heart so happy!

   Milestones/Skills
  • First time in big boy bed (see 'sleep' above)

Funnies and Favorites
  •  Favorite movie: Robots
  • Favorite book: Ernie and Bert Can
  • Favorite game: being chased around the kitchen and in circles
  • Really good at kicking and 'dribbling' the soccer ball
  • Favorite toy: Still loving his balls
  • I had to include this picture for all the Toy Story enthusiasts. One day we were playing with Buzz upstairs and I mentioned something about him flying and the next thing I know Buzz is being launched down the stairs onto the ground. Perfect reenactment of one of the saddest scenes in the original.
  • Hot enough in California for splash pad time in May. I picked this one up at Target and it was the perfect way to keep cool while playing outside. He always wanted me to stomp around in the water with him.
  • Favorite ride/game: This virtual ride at Chuck E. Cheese. This kid would sit on that ride forever, even if I didn't put any money in it. I can't tell you how much money I have spent on this machine, I probably could have bought our own by now. This time he suckered grandma onto it for all three rides, plus the bonus one :)
  • And jumping of course! Discovering the joys of the trampoline at grandma and grandpa's house made this the happiest boy on Earth.

Monkeys, Alligators, and Meltdowns... Oh MY!

All of the pictures of Myles on my computer are divided into folders by months. So when I am ready to do the next Myles Monthly I just go to that folder and start from there. Sometimes I will open up a new month and see something that I completely forgot about. This is one of those times. I found all of these zoo pictures from a time we went to the Oakland Zoo when Myles was about 19 1/2 months. After I was super disappointed by our trip to the San Fransisco Zoo, I thought I would give the Oakland one a try.
The week we went Myles got sick on Wednesday, but was feeling better by the end of the night. Thursday was spent in the house making sure he was better, so I figured by Friday he would be ready to spend the day outside exploring.... eh.. not so much. The trip didn't go as planned and we only stayed long enough to see a couple things, but I did get a few good pictures of our day.

We started out at the monkeys.

I guess this one is known for showing off all day long.

We had to check out the birds because Myles has a slight infatuation with them.

This is when the meltdown started. He was freaking out and only wanted to be held. I somehow managed to get him to go inside the reptile house and look around for all of about 2 minutes.

My favorite of the whole day! I'm sure they were mating, but I imagined them to be a mommy and baby :)

The crocs were right outside the reptile house.

Next we made our way to the petting zoo part. After carrying him around for 5 minutes, he finally let me put him down long enough to brush a couple animals.

Then it was complete meltdown time and I couldn't hold him off any longer. I wasn't able to carry him and push the big stroller at the same time, so I had to strap him in and push him all the way back to the car while he was screaming bloody murder! I am sure everyone there thought I was torturing him as he was flailing and jerking his body every which way and yelling so loud the lions woke up. Definitely not the ideal trip I had planned but that's the way it goes with toddlers sometimes. I guess he wasn't completely better so really it was my fault... lesson learned for sure!

What's your/your kids' favorite animals at the zoo?

Myles Monthly: 19

As you may know, I didn't decide to start my blog until my son Myles was about 8 months old. And well... now he is over 2 years old! I'm still trying to get caught up with the monthly updates and monthly favorites, so I can get, and hopefully stay, up to date.

 February 15th- March 14th, 2014

Health
Finally nothing bad to report here! After the last two months (17 and 18), I very much welcomed a month with no new sicknesses. He did get two new teeth (his top eye teeth) this month, but per usual, it wasn't that big of a deal. His hair was as crazy, beautiful as ever (see pictures below) and we just generally had a really good month!

Eating
Finally got this kid to eat more! He still really wouldn't eat much for breakfast (usually just fruit) because he nursed for a while when he first woke up. He would eat a really good lunch. Dinner was hit or miss. Sometimes he would eat a lot and other times he barely touched any of his food. I never really made a conscious decision in regards to how I would handle eating situations with Myles; I really just fell into the thought of not pushing it on him. I don't see any point or reason to force him to eat or punish him for not eating. I ask him to please eat more or try a certain food, but when he tells me he is done, I let him be done.

Some of his new favorites this month: eggs, cheese, fries, fruit snacks, jello, and noodles.

Sword fighting with corn on the cob :)

Turkey dogs and fries (we shared)!

He also got to taste his very first ice cream cone. I actually didn't plan on getting him any because he never ate any when I would offer him some at home. I bought a cone for myself and then gave it to him to let him try... and I never got it back! He has yet to ever do this again though.

Still breastfeeding of course. In the morning he would wake up crying. I would go get him and bring him back into bed with me to nurse for about an hour (mixed with playing). Then he typically wouldn't nurse again until nap time. I talked last month about how we were weaning our daytime nursings and that continued to go well. It was very rare that he would ask to nurse during the daytime now. He would nurse throughout nap time and then again right before bed for 10 minutes.
I was very happy to finally be down to 3 times a day. It was beginning to take a toll on me when he would still want to be nursing all day long. It took a couple of months because I really just let him do it on his own (with a little distraction and redirection from me), but he did great and we adjusted well.

  Sleeping
I honestly can't really remember any specifics this month on sleep. His schedule has pretty much been the same since he was 12 months. Bed time from 9pm-8am and one nap from 1pm-3/4pm.

Saying
He continued to add many new words this month (words that he used consistently):
Cheese, Dobbey (our dog's name), doggie, flippy (for skateboard), rock, milk (the word he used for any liquid even though he didn't drink milk other than breastmilk directly form me)

Animal noises: added oink noise
Began using two words together like: daddy's shoes, Elmo wet

And true to toddler form his answer to everything was "NO!" even when he really wanted to say yes :)

Outings
  • At the beginning of this month I took Myles to the Exploratorium to celebrate his half birthday. Okay.. I am sure some of you may think that is a bit crazy but I love to celebrate any/all milestones. It's not something I will do forever, but at this age with so much growing and learning, even just every six months can feel like a whole year has gone by. He didn't get gifts or a cake or anything; just took him to a fun place. We invited our friends Cameron and Leesa to come. The Exploratorium is a hands-on, science based museum. So even though most of the stuff there was way above their age, the boys had fun with what they could play with. Myles, of course, spent most of his time playing with the beach ball that was being held up by air. He couldn't figure it out and would get mad until I dropped the ball down far enough that he could reach it. He couldn't understand how the ball was up so high in the air. Pretty much the greatest part of my day!
  •  We also spent a day at a small little amusement park with Cameron this month. They loved the train the most and Myles enjoyed this carousal ride.
  • Lots of park time, of course. Our dog is getting very old and can't walk a lot so we don't take him to the park very much, but when we do it is a total treat for Myles. This was the first time he got to 'walk' him around and he thought it was the coolest thing ever!
  • My dad came to visit us this month too! We loved having him and Myles loved that there was another person to take by the hand and lead around to every place he went all day long. We took a trip to San Fransisco, lots of outdoor time, and playing around the house.
   Milestones/Skills
  • 99% of all the parks out here have climbing walls. It wasn't ever anything I noticed in Illinois, so I guess it is just a popular apparatus in California. Myles had wanted to climb up this wall so badly the first couple of times we went to this park. I am not tall enough to help him get very far up, so when daddy and grandpa came along, he took full advantage of their height. He was so happy and proud of himself for making it up. And in true Myles fashion, he wanted to do it over and over and over!
  • Okay so this is a really silly mommy moment, but I had to. No Myles is not going to school or daycare... I just had to buy this cute Elmo backpack for him (since I stopped carrying a diaper bag) and when he asked to put it on and walk down the street, I had to take pictures. So ridiculous, I know, but also ridiculously cute!
  • Lifting weights of course! My dad is just as goofy as us so we love having him around. He put Myles' shoes on the end of a metal pole and told Myles it was for lifting weights. One of the cutest things I have ever seen!

  • We finally got Myles his first basketball hoop and he made his first basket!

Funnies and Favorites
  •  Just another testament to my dad's goofy and fun nature is the fish 'tank' he set up for Myles. For some crazy reason, he came up with the idea to put some goldfish into Myles' water table! So we picked up some at the pet store and Myles literally had the time of his life. He was utterly amazed by the fish and couldn't stop trying to touch them and pick them up! (more fish playing shenanigans)

  • We also used our water table for some bird seed playing. Mark got me a bird house and seed for Valentine's Day and Myles quickly took to being the resident bird seed handler. First we played with it like sand, then we sat in it, and then we grabbed handfuls and reached to the sky to try and feed the birds!
  • Getting goofier by the day I tell ya! Astronaut bag head and nap time in basketball hoop boy:
  •  I wanted to take some pictures of Myles in this sweater because it was my absolute favorite and he was about to grow out of it. So we did a little mini photo shoot in the house and this is what he gives me:
  • Myles has always been really obsessed with our cat. However our cat is not one to like to be messed with or touched more than just a pet on the back. I feel so bad for Myles because he wants to play with him so badly, but anytime Myles gets close to him he runs away. So this is a very rare photo:

{Fall Family Bucket List}: Pumpkin Patch vol. 2

So by the title of this post it may be concluded that I have a problem... and normally I would try to justify this problem with some sort of excuse about how our first pumpkin patch was in Illinois so I had to go to another patch out here in California, but let's be real here people.. I have a thing for pumpkin patches and I also have a Type-A thing that makes me have to check out every single patch, museum, festival, park, etc. in existence. So here I am today sharing with you guys our second pumpkin patch experience (first in California). And if I am being completely forthcoming, I have even since taken Myles to a third pumpkin patch! I'll spare you a third post though and just get to this one! I am also linking up again with two of my favorite blogging buddies: Elizabeth from Chasin' Mason and Desiree from Macke Monologues for their Fall Family Bucket List.

All in all, this patch was pretty cool as far as activities goes... but we didn't have that great of an experience because of the weather. It was just so dang hot, and while Myles seemed to not be bothered by it, I was miserable. Thinking that it was finally starting to cool down a bit, I dressed us both in pants and t-shirts. The weather here is so different than what I am used to so I am always dressing wrong. It will be a cool and cloudy 60 degrees in the morning and then by noon it's clear skies and blazing hot. I haven't figured it out yet, so it was my mommy fail on this one!  Shorts would have made the trip a lot more enjoyable, but we hung in there and did the best we could.

Straw maze: I was super surprised that Myles spent tons of time in this maze. I didn't think he would even walk through it, but he was running around, crawling through holes like a regular farm boy!

I'm not really sure why, but they had a reptile show going on in the barn that day. There were tables lined with snakes, spiders, scorpions, and other creepy crawlers.

Myles touched this snake a couple of times. At first he touched the tail and I missed the picture so I asked him to touch it again. Then he reached for its head (this picture was taken right between him touching the tail and then going for the head), the lady jerked back, and Myles got a little freaked out. I guess she wasn't expected that as most people know not to go for the head, but Myles really had no idea and was scared by her reaction. After that he was done with the snakes.

They also had some aquatic life to touch like this sea star. I love that Myles is so willing to touch things, check them out, and not be scared. It makes everything much more interesting and fun.

They had a little area with animals that we checked out (really dirty though) and tons of crafts that we bypassed. We did grab a really good lemonade though before we headed to the hayride out to the pumpkin patch.
View on the hayride:

While on the wagon, I asked Myles if he wanted to hold my hand, greatest feeling in the world right there:

And then we finally made it to the patch!

He found a ladybug on one of the pumpkins:

He searched for a while and finally found the perfect pumpkin...

... coming to show me the winner...

Slightly deformed, still partly green, and rotted out... but it was perfect!

Have you spent the day at the pumpkin patch yet?
